Phantom figures and broken doorways…

This is the first in a series of 12×12 compositions… my computer has claimed two other collages as bestial sacrifices to the unstable Corel gods. Heartless bastards. Anyway, these are going to be simple compositions relying more on one or two dynamic elements to focus on while playing with texture and color. The 12×12 aspect ratio makes me feel like I’m playing with album covers from LPs that languish in an obscure alternative dimension.

This is the last of the ultra wide landscapes I think I will be doing for a while. I need to get my scanner back up and running to scan some new colors/textures and will be contacting junk yards and shops to try to photograph their stranger inventory. With the purchase of a new backdrop (ie a dense denim gradient from Joann’s Fabrics) I’ll also be shooting some head shots and 2/3 portraits sometime soon.

The first panoramic I’ve finished in a new series at the 12×48 inch aspect ratio around the idea of dreamscapes, a new world perceived as a sliver of detail. I’ve got two more in the works right now, one nearing completion. Think this might compliment the series of 10×30 landscapes that I did late last year, a kind of surreal counterpoint to a show.

2012… Day One…

This a new year of productivity, of creativity and I’m trying to start it off right. Been working on a few different collages over the past few days, this is a rough one that is still taking form. I’m researching magazines, checking juried shows and this year, I’m going big. No more bullshit, I’m putting myself out there and looking at new ways to promote and display my work. This will be the first year with weekly updates and work created on a regular basis. This will be my first year where I think I can make this happen.

Another new collage, fourth in three days…. lets churn these out Still in rough shape but the basic composition I’ve got down. Will update and name as I complete it. Need to upload the in process shots of the collage for these I think, showing the layers, the blends, the attempts and the failures.

More of an exercise in texture and layering, I’m still playing with the tendrils against a multilayered background of rust and color. Tossed in some shots of the crowds at Burning Man to try to make it a bit more thematically sound. Will update collage as I work on it on.

Finally feeling a bit in my own head, overdosing on indie rock and melancholia. I’m working within collages, viewing them as architecture where I develop the foundations, construct the walls and create the door to escape. (updating as I edit the images… trying to keep them fairly streamlined)
